Book Review : The Housemaid by Freida Mc Fadden

Book Review

The Housemaid: An absolutely addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist

The surprise comes from the fact that I did not know that it is a free adaptation of Jane Eyre, the famous novel by Charlotte Brontë. We are more used to those in the works of Jane Austen. It's fun to see how the author transposed the story of Victorian England to contemporary American society, including Me Too, of course! We find all the original ingredients: madness, the attic, injustice, gossip etc. Without spoiling anything, Jane is here Millie, she is not coming from a rough school for orphans but from prison, one is a governess for the Rochester family and the other cleaning lady for the Winchesters. Like its elder, this novel is told in the first person. Obviously there will be no Victorian morality here! The problem is that you quickly understand the author's intentions and the ending is not a revelation. Some things sometimes lack logic but I'm not going to do my “Misery”, it's a fiction. Not very long, it can be read well, in a weekend, for those who like to read.
